After graduating from high school, Obama attended Columbia University in New York City. He studied political science and international relations. While at Columbia, Obama became involved in political activism. He organized protests against apartheid in South Africa and the Vietnam War.

After graduating from Columbia, Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago. He worked with low-income families to help them improve their lives. He also helped to organize voter registration drives and get out the vote for Democratic candidates.
